Let’s talk outdoor fabrics because not all of them are made equal, especially when it comes to standing up to our intense Australian sun.
I get asked all the time what fabrics are best for outdoor seating, and to be honest, it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make when it comes to longevity and performance. Some fabrics look beautiful straight out of the packet, but a few months into our hot summer days and they can fade, break down fade or lose their water resistance completely.
Here’s what I always look for
1. UV Resistance but not just any rating
A lot of international brands market their fabrics as UV resistant, but what they don’t say is that it’s often based on testing done in European or American conditions. Our Aussie sun is next level. We need fabrics that are tested and proven to hold up here because a cushion that lasts five years in New Zealand might only last one year in Perth.
I always recommend sticking with trusted suppliers like Sunbrella, Mokum, or Zepel & Warwick who have collections specifically made for our conditions.
2. Mould and Mildew Resistance
Especially if your cushions are going poolside, undercover or near the ocean, this is non-negotiable. Look for fabrics that are designed to dry quickly and resist bacteria build-up. Some cheaper options soak up water and never quite bounce back.
3. Cleanability
I’m a mum love having people over so I know how important it is that your cushions clean up well. The right outdoor fabric should be able to handle a bit of life like sunscreen marks, spilt drinks, sticky fingers and still come up fresh with a simple wipe or hose down. This is also the kind of wear and tear commercial seating in restaurants cafes ect need to consider when making selections.
4. Texture and Feel
Just because it’s outdoor doesn’t mean it has to feel stiff or plasticky. The outdoor ranges we use at EBC feel beautiful to touch with soft weaves, linen-like textures and subtle tones that won’t scream pool beanbag.
5. Colour Choice with Fade in Mind
Darker colours can often fade faster than lighter or more neutral tones, especially under harsh Australian sun. That’s why it’s important to select high-quality outdoor fabrics with proven fade resistance. I always help our clients choose colours that not only suit their space beautifully but are also designed to handle the elements season after season.
My tip
Start with how you want the space to feel. Relaxed and coastal? Luxe and low-maintenance? Then choose a fabric that can live up to both the look and the lifestyle.
If you’re unsure, come in and see me. I’ll walk you through it. We work with beautiful fabric houses that offer proper warranties and performance ratings that match our climate. No guesswork.
