Scenting Our Homes Naturally — A Healthier Way to Freshen the Air
We often associate the scent of home with comfort and cleanliness, yet rarely pause to consider the potential impact these fragrances can have on our health.
We light a candle, spray the cushions, or mist the bedding, all in the hope of creating a space that feels inviting and clean. But what if those “fresh” supermarket sprays are doing the opposite filling our homes with toxins instead of comfort?
My journey to finding healthier ways to scent our home began after my mum was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.
It was a time that made me stop and look closer at everything around us — what we eat, what we put on our skin, and especially, what we breathe in every day.
As I started researching, I discovered that many conventional air fresheners, candles, and fabric sprays contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and synthetic fragrances that can build up in the body over time. Some of these chemicals are linked to hormonal disruption, respiratory irritation, and even neurological issues. Research also shows that toxins stored in the body can contribute to inflammation and long-term health concerns, including those related to the brain.
That realisation changed everything for me.
Healthier Alternatives to Synthetic Sprays
Creating a beautiful scent at home doesn’t have to come at the cost of our health.
Here are some of my favourite ways to keep the home smelling fresh and comforting — naturally.
1. Linen and fabric sprays made with essential oils
Instead of chemical-based sprays, I use (or make) gentle blends of distilled water, witch hazel or alcohol, and pure essential oils.
Scents like lavender, eucalyptus, citrus, and cedarwood are naturally cleansing and uplifting. A light spritz on cushions, curtains, or bedding brings that “just washed” feeling without any residue.
2. Diffusers and essential oil blends
A simple ceramic or electric diffuser can transform a space. Choose therapeutic-grade oils and experiment with combinations — for example, sweet orange + clove for warmth, or peppermint + lemon for freshness.
3. Fresh herbs and dried botanicals
Bundles of rosemary, lavender, or eucalyptus look beautiful hung in a bathroom or laundry and release subtle, natural fragrance over time.
4. Baking soda and natural deodorising
A bowl of baking soda with a few drops of essential oil can help neutralise odours in smaller spaces a simple, chemical-free trick.
5. Natural candles and beeswax melts
If you love candlelight (and I do), look for candles made from beeswax or soy with cotton wicks and natural essential oil scents. They clean the air rather than polluting it.
Why It Matters
It’s easy to underestimate the power of scent.
Smell is deeply connected to memory, emotion, and our sense of comfort it’s one of the ways we create “home.” But more than that, it’s also about protecting the space where our bodies and minds rest.
For me, this shift wasn’t about being perfect it was about being more mindful.
Choosing safer alternatives is one small way we can protect ourselves and our loved ones, while still surrounding our homes with beauty and warmth.
Creating a home that feels good should also be good for you.
Every fabric we touch, every scent in the air it all adds up to how we feel, heal, and live day to day.
With love,
